Žirje

Žirje is the most distant inhabited island of the Šibenik archipelago, of the same island chain like Kornati islands. Due to its geographical position, it has been controlling the navigation in this part of the Adriatic Sea from ancient times. The military importance of the island is most apparent in the fortifications of Gradina and Gušterne (the first half of the 6th century), as well as in Zvizdulje, the location of the coastal artillery in the Homeland War.

The Žirje coast is well-indented and it has numerous bigger and smaller inlets (Mala and Velika Stupica, Tratinska, Muna, etc.) which serve as a safe shelter for boats. In the central part of the island there is a vast and fertile field and the village Žirje is settled in the north-eastern part hereof. The highest peak is Kapić (134 m), a hill-fort from prehistoric times.

From ancient times the inhabitants of Žirje have been involved in agriculture. They grow wine grapes, olive trees, figs and vegetables, as well as a famous sort of green plum. Fishing has also been playing an important role, because the sea around the island abounds in fish. Žirje has many natural beauties, clear and blue sea. The island is well-connected with Šibenik by ship and ferry lanes and it has a good network of roads, paths and tracks.
